CHICAGO (BEVERLY) — In a pointed jab against Congressman Dan Lipinski, Mayor Lori Lightfoot endorsed progressive Democrat Marie Newman, who is challenging the socially conservative Lipinski in the upcoming Illinois 3rd Congressional District primary.
The Chicago mayor and Newman were joined Saturday morning for a rally at Beverly Unitarian Church by leaders and volunteers presenting NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Illinois, The Sierra Club, Moms Demand Action Illinois, SEIU Local 1, Indivisible Chicago, Indivisible Illinois and members of the grassroots Coalition for Change in Illinois’ 3rd District.
Lightfoot called Newman “a shining example of what a progressive, pragmatic Democrat looks like.”
“Whether on women’s, LGBTQ+ or the rights and interests of immigrants and refugees, Dan Lipinksi is on the wrong side of history, he doesn’t reflect our values and it is time for him to go,” Lightfoot said. “I am all about a big tent. That is what sets us apart as Democrats. But we simply cannot embrace someone who holds different views and – this is important – actively works to deny the rest of us our rights. That is a bridge too far. He must go.”
In the 2018 primary, Newman mounted Lipinski’s biggest challenge to date since he assumed the congressional seat former held by his father, Bill Lipinski, in 2005. Newman came within 2,000 votes of winning the Democratic nomination in the primary and ending the 37-year Lipinski stronghold in IL-03.
This time around, in addition to Lipinski, Newman faces two other Democratic contenders, Rush Darwish, who owns a multi-media company, and Charles Hughes. Lipinski campaign staffers expect Darwish to siphon away potential Newman votes in the March 17 primary. During Saturday’s presst event, Newman likened her campaign to Lightfoot’s underdog mayoral race last year.
“Today is not just an honor, it is amazing,” Newman told her supporters. “People always ask ‘how did [Mayor Lightfoot] win her election?’ I know the secret. Hard work, tenacity, passion, integrity, and true blue leadership. That’s what it’s going to take to win this race.”
In addition to Lightfoot, Newman has racked up endorsements from Chicago Aldermen George Cardenas (12th) and Mike Rodriguez (22nd); Cicero Township Committeewoman Blanca Vargas, The Sierra Club, Cook County College Teachers Union Local 1600, the Illinois Federation of Teachers and National Nurses United.
Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District sweeps through sections of Chicago’s Southwest Side, and the south and western suburbs up to the Cook-DuPage border, and a small section of Will County. In an email to IL-03 residents after the rally, Lightfoot alluded to Lipinski, known for his conservative social stances on abortion, immigration and same-sex marriage, as President Donald Trump’s “favorite Democrat.” (Read Lightfoot’s endorsement statement in its entirety):
This is a dark time for our democracy and our personal rights. Families are being torn apart at the border due to President Trump’s inhumane immigration policies and Republicans have passed strict anti-abortion laws that undermine the protections of Roe v. Wade.
I ran for mayor in part to ensure that Chicago will never follow the path down which Trump is trying to take our country. And on March 17th, voters have an important decision to make right in our backyard.
I am proud to endorse Marie Newman to represent Illinois’ Third District. Will you join me in supporting her campaign by making a donation?
I know that when it comes to protecting hardworking immigrants and refugees who have helped build and grow our city and region, Marie Newman will stand in solidarity with these important communities. Her opponent, Dan Lipinski, called Trump a “champion on immigration reform” and voted against the DREAM Act. Those are not our values.
Speaking of values, Marie has been a stalwart supporter of a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, while Rep. Lipinski has sponsored over 55 bills to restrict reproductive rights. This is not ancient history. Just last month, Lipinski joined Republicans calling on the Supreme Court to reverse Roe v. Wade.
The list goes on. Lipinski voted against Obamacare, mocks efforts to combat climate change, and is actually still opposed to marriage equality. That’s right, if it were up to Dan Lipinski, I wouldn’t be able to marry my wife.
It’s no wonder some refer to Lipinski as “Trump’s favorite Democrat.”
We don’t need any more politicians who are actively attacking our communities and trying to turn back the clock. It’s time for the people of the Third District to have a real Democrat representing their values. I hope you’ll support Marie Newman.
